Germany

Civil protection and public safety in Germany are organized on a federal basis and are jointly administered by the federal government, the states, and local municipalities. While fire protection and emergency medical services fall primarily under the jurisdiction of the states and municipalities, the federal government assumes coordinating responsibilities in disaster management through the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance. Police work is largely carried out by the state police forces, supplemented by federal agencies such as the Federal Police and the Federal Criminal Police Office. Together, these structures form the central pillars of the German security, emergency response, and disaster management system.

Fire Service

The first fire departments in Germany trace their origins to the 19th century, when volunteer fire departments were established in numerous cities and towns to provide organized firefighting services. As industrialization progressed, fire protection became increasingly important. Today, the German fire service consists of volunteer fire departments, professional fire departments, and industrial fire departments. In total, over one million firefighters are active, whether in fire protection, technical rescue, or disaster and emergency medical services.

In addition to volunteer and professional fire departments, I also feature patches from industrial and airport fire departments here.

Air Rescue/EMS

German air rescue began to develop in the 1950s, when helicopters were first used for medical emergencies. A key milestone came in the 1970s with the introduction of the so-called “Christoph” system, which enabled comprehensive emergency medical care by air throughout the country. Today, air rescue in Germany is operated by organizations such as the ADAC, the Bundeswehr, the BMI (Federal Ministry of the Interior), the DRF, and even the police. It is an integral part of the emergency medical services and handles both emergency missions and intensive care and specialized transports.

The patches are presented here, separated by organization.

Police

The history of the police in Germany dates back to the 19th century, when state and local police agencies were established to maintain public safety and order. Over time, these evolved into professional organizations with clearly defined responsibilities. After World War II, responsibility for policing in Germany was transferred to the federal states, supplemented by federal agencies such as the Federal Police. Today, the police are an important component of internal security and carry out tasks related to threat prevention, law enforcement, and the protection of public order.

The patches are presented here, divided into state police, federal police, and special patches.
