Austria

Civil protection and public safety in Austria are organized on a federal basis and are jointly administered by the federal government, the states, and the municipalities. While disaster control and firefighting services fall primarily under the jurisdiction of the states and municipalities, the federal government assumes coordinating responsibilities within the framework of state crisis and disaster management. Police duties are carried out nationwide by the Federal Police, which is responsible for maintaining public safety, preventing threats, and enforcing the law. Together with organizations such as fire departments and emergency medical services, these structures form the central pillars of Austria’s security, emergency response, and disaster management system.

Police

The history of the police in Austria dates back to the 19th century, when state police structures were established and increasingly professionalized in the Austrian Empire. Following several organizational reforms in the 20th century, the Federal Gendarmerie, the Security Guard, and the Criminal Investigation Corps were merged in 2005 to form a unified Federal Police. Today, it is responsible nationwide for maintaining public safety, preventing threats, and law enforcement. One significant special unit is the Cobra Task Force, founded in 1978, which specializes in counterterrorism, hostage rescues, and particularly dangerous operational situations, and ensures rapid operational readiness throughout the country through its regional locations. Together, the Federal Police and its specialized units form a central pillar of internal security in Austria.
